Jihad and Terrorism: Separating Chaff from Grain.
« on: May 15, 2017, 04:06:23 PM »
 As-Salaam alaikum,
Literally Jihad means to struggle or strive, or to work for something with determination. From Islamic perspective, Jihad means all endeavors designed to cultivate Islam inwardly and outwardly in a free atmosphere. It does NOT mean war as the arabic word for war is HARB and the word for fighting is QITAL.

Thus Jihad does not aim to force people into Islam; it only aims to remove the obstacles preventing the presentation and explanation of Islam to the people. The Muslim ruler can declare and execute combative Jihad when:--
 (a) There are aggressive designs against Islam.
 (b) There are concerted efforts to eject Muslims from their land and legally acquired property.
 (c) There are Military campaigns launched to eradicate them.

Islam divides terrorism into 4 forms: hirabah, baghyi, fasad and fitnah. Let us take them one-by one.
HIRBAH:-- is to revolt against the established system and to fight against it. For those who
commit this act, Islam prescribes appropriate punishment as in Ayat 33 of Surat
Ma'eda of the Holy Qur'an (5:33) "The punishment of those who wage war against
Allah and His Messenger, and strive with might and main for mischief through the land
is execution or crucifixion, or the cutting off of hands and feet from opposite sides, or
exile from the land: that is their disgrace in this world, and a heavy punishment is
               theirs in the Hereafter."

BAGHYI:-- is a kind of terrorism which aims to spread fear and terror for the purpose of
changing the system. To call a revolt terrorism, it should be directed against a
legitimate Head of State representing a legitimate State.
Where Baghyi occurs, Islam commands to find peaceful solution between fighting factions:--

"If 2 parties among the Believers fall into a quarrel, make ye peace between them: but if
one of them transgresses beyond bounds against the other, then fight ye (all) against
that one that transgresses until it complies with the Command of Allah" (49:9)

FASAD:-- is a general term for creating mischief among people and causing disorder, tyranny,
extravagance and immorality that harm society's social and economic life.

FITNAH:-- is the use of terror in order to force people to change their beliefs... sort of tyranny
against liberty of thought or practice of religion.

In Islam, using terrorism as defined above is worse than slaughter. It is stated in the Holy Qur'an that "...FOR TURMOIL AND OPPRESSION ARE WORSE THAN SLAUGHTER" (2:191)
