Menopause & Iddah
« on: June 11, 2017, 04:06:24 AM »
Respected Mufti Sahib,
Assalaamu 'alaykum warahmatullaah. I pray all is well and you and family are having a peaceful Ramadhaan, aameen

In sharee'ah, the age of menopause is 55 lunar years though a woman can become menopausal earlier medically.

Following is from Dhukrul Muta'ahhilin
If she reached it (i.e. age of menopause) and her bleeding seized, then she is ruled to be in menopause, otherwise, not

Q. My question is regarding that woman who reaches this stage (i.e. she stops menstruating) before 55 years. Is she regarded as menopausal in the sharee'ah? Are there different opinions on this?

Apparently it has implications on her Iddat rulings?

Advise would be much appreciated.

Bismillahi Ta'ala

Apologies for delay due to Ramadhan. InshAllah I will now be checking the forum every day so will be more updated on it.

al Muheet al Burhani mentions the different aqwaal in the fuqaha about the time for menapause.

ُEssentially 55 is the final qawl in this. The purport is that before 55 there is still a chance of bleeding. So if she stops bleeding before this, then she is still not a menapausal, rather in her state of tuhr. Since there is no boundry for tuhr period, it can extend into months and years too.
